New Year's Eve Sailing

Posted by Ian Cowdale

Some of us ventured into the Park this morning with the aim of sailing or giving warm support from the bank. Unfortunately the water was found to be too hard, so we watched the gulls trying to land on the ice for a while, checked the boats over then retired to the Clubhouse for coffee and mince pies and planned our sailing for 2015. ------ Happy New Year!

Rearranged Committee Meeting

Posted by Tony Sutton

Just a reminder to say that the Committee Meeting originally scheduled for Wednesday 12th November has been rearranged because it clashed with a meeting of the West Midlands RYA's Regional Committee on which the club has representatives. The meeting will now be held on Wednesday 19th November and any members who have any issues, comments or suggestions should pass them on to any committee member.

Sailing in November

Posted by Ian Cowdale

The races held in November are called the ‘Frostbite Series’ but the water is still far from cold, and this time of year the winds that have recently made life ‘interesting’, start to become more predictable and calmer. If you haven’t read it already, have a look at the RYA article in Lucy’s post below for a few hints and tips about sailing this time of year. Just think, at least we don’t have waves to contend with! See you on the water....

Bonfire Weekend – 8th and 9th November

Posted by Ian Cowdale

For those of you who haven’t been down recently, a reminder that in the interest of safety, the Park is closed for normal use...including Sailing, on both Saturday and Sunday. In theory there may be access to the Park later on Sunday but in practice it takes so long for vehicles to be cleaned off and leave that the majority of the day is lost.

Sailing by Ellowes School

Posted by Lucy Griffiths

This year's students from Ellowes Hall School have been sailing on Wednesdays from September. Their last session was 22nd October. From 5th November they will be continuing their studies in the clubhouse. There's plenty of theory to get through before sailing starts again. We're hoping this will be late February or early March. Club members are welcome to join us to brush up on their own theory - especially those pesky knots!

Guy Fawkes Trophy Race Saturday 1st November

Posted by Tony Sutton

Don't forget that we usually race on the first Saturday of each month (as opposed to the normal Sundays). This week's race, the Guy Fawkes Trophy is a bit special for us at Himley as the last of the gunpowder plotters were captured at Holbeche House which is less than 1/2 mile away, The ghost of the headless horseman is rumoured to ride past on cold November nights (usually seen by people after a lengthy visit to the Dudley Arms). The plotters were not particularly clever as their gunpowder got wet and they tried to dry it out in front of the fire with predictable results. This was probably the first ever fireworks display inspired by Guy Fawkes.

A guided tour of the Himley Hall grounds and the sailing club will follow shortly. We're just waiting to get the best shots of the autumn leaves.
